Digital File Preparation Guide
Use the page design programs such as Quark or InDesign? Create your document in the exact size of the piece final cut. For example, if you are creating a letter-size document of several pages with pages, the page size is 8.5x11, 11x17 no. ? Use the master page to place common issues, such as page numbers in the same place in multiple pages. ? Create multiple-page documents in the reader? S spreads. ? Extend the images that bleed from the page of the document by January 1 / 8? (standard). ? Remove unused colors in the color of the EPS to design pages and files. ? That cross-imaging more pages should be divided into two categories of image and aligned in their respective home pages. ? Scale of bitmap images no more than 10% up or down from its original size. A drastic expansion cause loss of detail and a sharp drop Image may extend the time and delay their work. ? Link images in your files FreeHand and Illustrator. Do not embed them. Tip: Be sure to include any Quark you will Xtensions you used to create your document. Tip: Creating files in drawing programs such as Illustrator, Freehand or Corel Draw can sometimes incur additional charges for printers. Saving Images? Save all Photoshop files in the CMYK color mode, which includes any nested or embedded files. ? Send Photoshop files only in TIFF or EPS formats (DCS is an EPS). ? Remove unused channels or alpha masks cut in the flattened Photoshop files. ? Remove unused colors in the color palette of Illustrator, FreeHand. ? Turn off JPEG, LZW, ZIP compression or Photoshop files. There are two types of images: bitmap and vector. Vectors consist of lines and curves that believes in programs such as Illustrator or Freehand. They are called vectors, which can be described in mathematical terms such as the size, length and position. Vector graphics are independent of the device, meaning they can be scaled up or with no loss in detail. Bitmap images are created in painting programs such as PhotoShop. Bitmaps (also called, raster images) are created in a grid with small squares called pixels. Each pixel has a color and location of value assigned to it. These images are dependent on the device, which means they have a fixed number of pixels for a given area. The images that appear irregular or bitmap does not have enough information or pixel resolution. A high-resolution image pixels will be over by the network, which allows greater detail and color transitions. Tip: A formula for determining the resolution (dpi) is as follows: 1.5 x = line of the screen resolution. Many still use the old formula of the line 2x screen, but there is no visible loss of detail at this lower dpi and save valuable disk space. Types of bitmap images (in bitmap mode) usually black and white images (no grays) used for text or logos. These should be saved at 600 dpi, TIFF and as a scale of 100% of the size. The background can be set to its design software none.Use of pages to color the image. Bitmap (greyscale or CMYK mode) These are black and white or color images. They must be saved at 225 dpi, as TIFF or EPS and scale to 100% of the intended size. Printers prefer TIFFs masks if there is no cut, because EPSS tend to have a slightly larger file size. The background should be white or color in QuarkXPress. Tip: If you are creating an image with a clipping path that must be saved as an EPS and tolerance must be established between 2 and 4, with 2 more stringent if a scenario of irregular forms. Bitmap (Duotone mode) These images can be monotonous, duotones, newts or quadtones and must be saved as an EPS. Tip: Use the channel 1 for the darker color and if you are using black make sure it says Black in the window, no process in Black (your page layout program will be seen as a different color). Adjust the screen angles in your page layout program not in PhotoShop. Scott Lithographing can select for you upon request. Vector can be saved at any size and scale up or down in your page layout program (we suggest 100% for a better preview) and can only be saved as an EPS. Tip: To prevent gradient bands: Set the output to resolution 2540. Color modes You can correct the color in RGB or LAB, but save the pictures that are imported into the program to design pages in CMYK mode. Imports of RGB to avoid the image of being the good. RGB is so the images you see only on a monitor. Tip: Remember to calibrate your monitor frequently and remove any alpha channels to reduce the file size. Selection of Color Spot (PMS), the colors must use the same name in all the image files. For example, if you're using PMS 185 hp in a file and PMS 185 CVU in another, your page layout program are seen as two colors. Please indicate whether a PMS color are built on site or off-color process. Tip: Keep in mind that some colors are not reproduced in a satisfactory manner when it is built out of the process. Tip: If you are using metallic inks is a good idea to aqueous or varnish layer of the road to avoid smearing. Sources? Be sure to include your printer and screen font for each font type 1. ? Check the source of use of windows to make sure they have included all their sources. ? If you? I have used sources in SPC artwork: Either convert the text to include routes or the source (s). Basic types of sources: PostScript, TrueType, OpenType. Postscript Type comes in 1.2, or 3 (Type 1 is the most popular). It will have two sources, the source screen and printer font font. The screen is to display the font on the screen (the icon displays a single "A"). The printer is the source used by printers and imagesetters to create the kind of mathematics. TrueType contains the screen and printer fonts in a file (the icon shows three "A? S). OpenType fonts are gaining in popularity due to its cross-platform capability and flexibility. They are mainly of type 1 or TrueType fonts in a TrueType Shell, so you only have a source file by the weight or style (ie, bold, italics, small caps, etc. ..). Tip: Using current and brand name whenever possible sources (ie.Adobe, Bitstream). Keep a compressed version of your font library and replace the sources that cause printing problems. Tip: Use the actual weight of the font, such as Helvetica Bold.Do not use styling menu. Trapping Printers normally handle the capture, to discuss any concerns you have. If you are comfortable doing their own, you should relay that to your printer. While you may be liable for any errors to catch. Spelling As a rule, printers do not check the spelling of the documents because they are not aware of the jargon, product names, pronouns or other special industries. Spell check and proof-read the document carefully. Is it? s also an excellent idea to have two other people proof-read the text before the presentation. Archives of PC printers were mainly based Mac, but virtually all of them now accept PC files created in QuarkXpress, PageMaker, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, Corel Draw and EPS files. Is it? sa good idea to check with the printer before sending files created with Microsoft products like MS Word or Publisher. Collection of Archives strongly recommend that you use to collect the exit option when using QuarkXpress. Collect all the elements of their work (images, fonts and files final) and place in one of three folders: Finals, support and Fonts.Do not send files that are not relevant to the job. Please be aware that Quark is listed in sources to collect the output report, but will not collect for you. Tip: I strongly recommend using FlightCheck or page layout program "preflight" Feature before submitting their files. Media Printers accept almost any media today, and many have FTP sites that can save you travel time.Your printer must have a list of acceptable media. Many printers archive file of their work in order to press the button again, but do not count on it! Make sure you have a backup of your project. I suggest a procedure regular file to make sure you have your work in the future. Personally, I use a digital tape system with Retrospect, and I maintain a full catalog outside the studio in case of fire or other losses. CHECKLIST FINAL:? All electronic files, support for images and fonts on disk? All photographs, slides, or the art of being scanned? The special instructions? A set of tests or Laser color? One set each of B & W laser composite / separations? A mock-up (if any)? A pre-printed sample (if applicable) About the author Derald Schultz is the founder and director of Mediarail Design, Inc.
